The World Steel Association (Worldsteel) says that Africa produced 1.9 million metric tons of crude steel in August 2024, out of the global 144.8 million metric tons.
In Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, South Africa and Tunisia are the top steel-producing countries.
The Association in its latest Crude steel production chart by region, also said that
Asia and Oceania produced 107.1 Mt, down 8.0% in the month under review.
Said the report: ” The EU produced 9.1 Mt, up 2.2%. Europe, Other produced 3.7 Mt, up 8.4%.
“The Middle East produced 3.4 Mt, down 3.2%. North America produced 9.0 Mt, down 3.8%. Russia & other CIS + Ukraine produced 7.0 Mt, down 8.7%. South America produced 3.6 Mt, up 0.8%.”
The report further analysed that the 71 countries reporting to the World Steel Association, the crude steel production out in the month accounted for approximately 98% of total world crude steel production in 2023.
Top 10 steel-producing countries
China produced 77.9 Mt in August 2024, down 10.4% on August 2023. India produced 12.3 Mt, up 2.6%. Japan produced 6.9 Mt, down 3.9%. The United States produced 7.0 Mt, up 0.7%. Russia is estimated to have produced 5.8 Mt, down 11.5%. South Korea produced 5.5 Mt, down 2.2%. Germany produced 2.9 Mt, down 0.5%. Türkiye produced 3.1 Mt, up 13.8%. Brazil produced 3.0 Mt, up 7.3%. Iran produced 1.4 Mt, down 9.9%.
Meanwhile, global steel capacity is projected to increase by 158 mmt in 2024-26 despite the uncertain steel demand outlook.
World crude steel production for the 71 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) was 144.8 million tonnes (Mt) in August 2024, a 6.5% decrease compared to August 2023.
