Wema Bank is in top gear to prepare for its 80th-anniversary celebration set for Friday, May 2nd, 2025.
Accordingly, the Bank has unveiled a new corporate identity reflecting its milestone celebration of 80 years.
Established on May 2, 1945, the Bank originally operated as a private limited liability company under the name Agbonmagbe Bank Limited.
Wema Bank traces its roots to the visionary Late Chief Mathew Adekoya Okupe. It started operations with branches in Ebute-metta, Sagamu, Abeokuta, and Ijebu-Igbo, and flourished under his leadership until it was acquired by the Western Nigeria Marketing Board.
Subsequently, in 1969, it was rebranded as Wema Bank Limited. Wema Bank has etched its legacy as Nigeria’s longest-surviving Indigenous bank, obtaining a commercial banking license and launching operations in the same year.
The journey continued with the bank’s conversion to a public limited liability company in 1987 and its listing on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in 1990 under the symbol WEMABANK.
An important milestone was achieved in February 2001 when Wema Bank was granted a Universal Banking License, solidifying its position in the financial landscape.
