An immigration officer on Tuesday confirmed that the Republic of Niger is no longer recognizing the ECOWAS Travel Certificate (ETC) or ECOWAS passport for entry into the country for Nigerian travelers.
The ECOWAS Travel Certificate and the ECOWAS passport are important travel documents that facilitate movement among member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
This development follows Niger’s recent withdrawal, along with Mali and Burkina Faso, from the Economic Community of West African States.
While Niger maintains an open border with Nigeria, new immigration measures are now being enforced at key border crossings, notably at Illela in Nigeria and Konni in Niger.
As a result, cross-border traders and commuters are encountering significant challenges due to the non-recognition of the ECOWAS passport as a valid travel document by the Nigerien authorities.
In a phone interview conducted at the Jibia/Magama Border in Katsina State, an immigration officer confirmed that Nigerien authorities have begun to implement this restriction.
It was also noted that Nigerian immigration authorities have not yet instituted similar restrictions on Nigerien citizens, pending further directives from higher authorities.
While official communication from the Nigerien government has not been issued regarding this matter, affected travelers are expressing concerns that the situation may escalate, potentially disrupting trade and movement across the border.
When contacted, Joel Ahofodji, the Head of Communication at the ECOWAS Commission, stated that the regional bloc is currently unaware of the policy changes enacted by the Niger Republic regarding the restrictions on ECOWAS passport holders.
This information may be of interest to those engaged in cross-border trade and travel. Further updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
