In the manufacturing sector of the Nigerian economy, the Food, Beverage and Tobacco industries, is the goose that lays the golden eggs by generating much of the wealth in , the sector.

Sadly, recent developments in the sector shows that the trillions of Naira investments in the sector including jobs are being cut into pieces by regulatory knife.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported the contribution of the Food and Beverage companies to the economy in its latest GDP report for Q4 2025 on Friday, February 27.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 4.07 percent (year-on-year) in real terms in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2025.

The growth rate, according to the organisation, is higher than the 3.76 percent recorded in Q4.

During the quarter under review, the growth of the manufacturing sector stood at 3.88 percent from 2.49 percent recorded in the fourth quarter of 2024.

The statistics body said that of the ten Sectoral groups under the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), the Food , Beverages and Tobacco (FOBTOB) accounted for the highest share of the GDP.

According to Jimoh Oyibo, the President of the FOBTOB, since December 2025 till date, across the country, indigenous manufacturing companies, especially local producers of sachet products and 10cl PET bottled products, are being sealed by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) under the leadership of Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General.

“Factories are being shut down. Depots are being closed. Warehouses are being locked including those that contain multiple other lawful products not connected to the targeted items,” said Oyibo.

“The ban is creating widespread confusion, fear, and economic paralysis and we are compelled to ask Professor Mojisola Adeyeye the following questions:

“What is her real motive behind this method of enforcement? Why are entire facilities being shut down instead of applying controlled, targeted regulation?

Why are lawful businesses, workers, transporters, retailers, and suppliers being collectively punished?

“An economy cannot survive when industries are shutdown instead of regulated”, he said.
