The smuggling of second-hand clothing into Nigeria poses a significant threat to the livelihoods of approximately one million five hundred thousand Nigerian tailors. Mr.

Alok Bhardwaj, Managing Director of Sunflag Nigeria Ltd., conveyed this critical statistic to the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Sen. John Enoh, during a recent visit to the company’s facility in Lagos.

Mr. Bhardwaj highlighted that the influx of smuggled second-hand clothing represents one of the most pressing challenges facing the Nigerian textile industry.

This issue adversely impacts various sectors within the textile value chain, including tailoring. He pointed out that Sunflag Nigeria Ltd. prioritizes local resources, utilizing Nigerian manpower, cotton, wool, threads, and yarns in its production processes. Between 1985 and 1990, the textile sector employed approximately 250,000 individuals across more than 250 companies.

However, current employment levels have plummeted to nearly 10,000. Mr. Bhardwaj stated, “It is noteworthy that Nigerians import textiles worth $6 billion annually. Consequently, this practice results in the employment of approximately 750,000 workers in China and India to meet domestic clothing needs.”

He called for the establishment of equitable trade practices that would prioritize Nigerian goods, thereby supporting and safeguarding the nation’s manufacturing sector.

“Creating jobs for our citizens has a ripple effect on the economy. To meet government growth targets, we must enhance local production capabilities,” he emphasized.

In response, the Minister commended Sunflag Nigeria Ltd. for its resilience amidst ongoing challenges within the industry.

He assured stakeholders that the government is dedicated to the development of the textile sector.

The Minister remarked, “The potential to create two million jobs is a conservative estimate. The issue surrounding the influx of unaccounted containers of goods into the country must be addressed.

The neighboring country, Benin Republic, has successfully established a vibrant textile garment industry, targeting the Nigerian market as a key component of their strategy.”

He concluded by reaffirming his ministry’s immediate mandate to promote locally made goods and services, emphasizing a commitment to transforming the current landscape of the textile industry in Nigeria.
