Beginning from October 1, the Federal Government hinted yesterday it will be spending about 15 billion megabytes of data monthly on secondary and tertiary students internet usage. This represents an estimated N180 billion in data value annually.
The minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, said that the programme would initially provide about five million eligible students with 100 megabytes of free data daily to access approved educational platforms and digital learning content.
Alausa said that the ambitious programme would run under the Zero-Rated Access to Educational Platforms and Content initiative.
The initiative, organised by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), was launched yesterday at Transcorp Hotel, Abuja.
He said that the intervention is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda (RHA), designed to benefit learners from low-income households and communities with limited access to conventional educational infrastructure.
