The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) embarked on a three-day industrial working visit to manufacturing companies in Kano State.Among the companies visited are Bright Star Plastic Limited and Pharmadex Nigeria Limited.
The delegation was led by Mr. Joseph Emoleke, Director of Membership Services, who represented the Director -General on day one.
Bright Star Plastics Nigeria Limited and Pharmadex Nigeria Limited both operate in the flexible plastic packaging sector.
The visit was part of MAN’s efforts to bolster its fact-based advocacy, particularly in response to regulatory developments surrounding the proposed ban on Single-Use Plastics (SUPs).
Bright Star Plastics employs over 250 workers and produces approximately 400 bags daily, each weighing 8kg.
To support its sustainability goals and secure raw materials for production, Bright Star runs an in-house recycling facility that handles both semi-processed and raw flexible plastic waste.
At Pharmadex Nigeria Limited, the delegation learned about the company’s transition from producing 50-micron water sachets to 27-micron versions, driven by economic considerations.
Pharmadex manufactures branded materials exclusively for client companies, thereby enhancing product traceability.
Its management highlighted that lighter packaging was necessitated owing to cost and lack of suitable alternatives.
With Kano generating over 4,000 tonnes of plastic waste monthly, the company stressed the need to prioritise recycling initiatives over a blanket ban on SUPs, framing plastic waste as a resource with untapped economic potential.
