A Victim of  supermarket frauds in Lagos, Nigeria, shares his experience via Facebook.

He began :” I found this very disturbing! There is something going on in most of the BIG supermarket in Nigeria.
I don’t know if you have noticed it too?

I went to the Supermarket with Shalewa yesterday and as I was selecting the things am buying, I was calculating it cos I had a budget not to spend more than a particular amount.

So everything I calculated was 27k.

On getting to the counter, the Girl at the counter scanned all the items and I gave her my ATM card.

I was surprised to see 31k on my print out recept which has been deducted from my account.

Immediately I told her I want to see the manager and I took the matter up with them and we calculated everything manually together and the manager saw that it was 27k, so how did 27k turn to 31k?

This is a day light Robbery and am not going accept it and in the cause of my drama at the supermarket. 3 other persons also calculated their items manually and saw that they were overcharged.

Pls, start calculating things you buy in those BIG supermarket manually before you get to the counter.

The manager was begging that it was a mistake.

Is the manager trying to tell me that their machine is making error to overcharge Customers ?

I have evidences from the other 3 people and have gotten their contacts as they promised me that they are ready for this case. Cos their own over charging is even much more than my own.

Pls, start calculating things you buy in those BIG supermarket manually before you get to the counter.

We must fish out those Supermarket that over charge people this New Year.

I will be happy if you can share this post to create more awareness, because once many people are aware of this fraud by the supermarkets, people will start calculating manually and we will know those Supermarket that are doing “wayo,” cheating .

Reactions

” But they normally print out itemised costing receipt, to present at the point of exit.
I know a lot of people do not really care as long as the cash in their kitty is enough.

This happens everyday at most busy supermarkets.

” The youths have carried their yahoo mentality to shopping centers.
Second, my own side of encounter, despite my meticulous scrutiny on item prices is a systemic price tag on items which does not tally with pay counter charge.

An item is tagged N800, and when you pick some quantity with a known price, you will be shocked that the price at the pay counter will be over N1000 per item.

At calculation you will be paying more than you have calculated at the picking point.
It’s absurd.

” I was a victim. Supermarket managers are not ignorant of the overcharges to items .
I got to know that the overages are shared among the staff. “
