The Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) and the National Metallurgical Development Centre (NMDC), have commenced collaboration to develop and locally produce ferro alloys from Nigeria’s mineral resources.
They have set December 2026 as the target date for laboratory-scale production of ferro manganese and ferrosilicon.
What is Ferro Alloys?
Ferro Alloys play a crucial role in steel production and defining their quality. They are used as deoxidisers and improve the properties of steel.
In a statement on Tuesday, RMRDC disclosed that the initiative followed a collaborative meeting between officials of the two agencies at the National Metallurgical Development Centre, Jos, Plateau State, where experts deliberated on strategies to establish a viable ferro alloys industry and reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported industrial inputs.
The meeting was convened by the RMRDC as part of its mandate to promote the development, processing, value addition and optimal utilisation of Nigeria’s raw materials for sustainable industrial development.
The RMRDC delegation was led by the Director, Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Department, Mr Abubakar Shehu Kollere.
Other members of the delegation included the Director, Technology Development Department, Mr Mohammed Njidda; Deputy Director, Process Equipment Maintenance Division, Engr Obassi Ettu; Deputy Director, Engineering Design and Development Division, Engr Aduagba Olarongbe Nuhu; RMRDC Plateau State Coordinator, Mrs Salifatu R. Guruza; and others.
