The Chairman of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) Kano-Jigawa chapter Alhaji Muhammad Bello Umar has said increase in electricity tariff has forced industrialists in the two states to be innovative in adopting energy efficiency as a survival Strategy.

Umar said this at an engagement with CEOs on GEF-UNIDO Industrial Energy Efficiency (IEE) and Resource Efficient Cleaner Production (RECP) project held in Kano.

He said industries now recycle waste not just to reduce cost but to be efficient to survive in a highly competitive environment, urging the government to encourage and reward industries into recycling.

Even though about 70to 80 percent of our Industries adopt energy efficiency, We cannot compete with Industries in China with their Dark Silent Factories investing in Robotic and AI technology.

I recently visited Germany and one Industrial estate is generating over 7000 MW of electricity, just one industrial estate is more than our country.

Public supply of stable and constant electricity is therefore critical because many SMEs cannot afford diesel-powered generators.

“The cost of electricity is making us innovative and we will continue to create awareness among our members to be energy efficient. Regulators should be discouraged from exhibiting Revenue-generation posture towards industries,” he added.

The Global Energy and United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) Industrial Energy Efficiency and Cleaner Production project has the Energy Commission of Nigeria and Manufacturers Association of Nigeria as executing partners with Bank of Industries, Federal Ministries of Power, Science and Technology, Standard Organisation of Nigeria, four Selected Universities and Nigeria Investment Promotion Council as key stakeholders
